While international attention is focused on Gaza, and before that, on Ukraine, the armed conflict and civil war in Sudan have already entered their second year. April Refugee Insights focuses on Sudan’s current crisis through the lens of Sudanese refugee and rights activist Adam, drawing on his lived experience and historical perspective.

치타공 선주민 줌머인에 대한 학살

Embarking on the first event of the new year, we are thrilled to continue our journey from the past year with a special presenter from the Jumma community for our January talk. Chakma, a refugee from the indigenous ethnic group primarily residing in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh and has been forced to leave their homelands, shares the past and current ethnocide committed on to the people and human rights violations situations. Chakma is the former president of Jumma People’s Network in Korea based in Gimpo.

워크숍 소개: 팔레스타인에서 벌어지고 있는 참상에 대응하여, 강제이주로 이어지고 있는 중대한 상황과 난민들의 경험을 시각적이고 예술적으로 전달하기 위해, 전통적인 손제작과 디지털 방법을 결합하여 포스터를 디자인하고 제작합니다. 타이포그래피, 포토콜라주 등 창의적인 포스터 제작과정을 통해 난민들의 목소리를 표현하는 플랫폼을 제공하며 시민들과 효과적으로 소통하는데 목적을 둡니다.

Overview: In response to the ongoing tragedy in Palestine, where forced displacement is a result of complex issues, this one-day workshop combines both handcrafted and digital methods for poster creation aims to effectively and artistically express the plight of refugees themselves, providing a creative and communicative tool for engaging with citizens.

부족을 묻지 말라

This month, our speaker Bereket will uncover the root causes of Ethiopia's political challenges. He will share a firsthand account about the profound impact of the politicization of tribal identity in Ethiopia, which has been marred by the shadows of its worst civil war in decades. While day-to-day conflicts have sadly become a new normal, at the heart of this upheaval lies the contentious concept of "Ethnic federalism," an ideology that has proven to be failed, sowing discord rather than fostering unity between different ethnic communities in Ethiopia.

한옥커즈 공동대표이자 사진작가, 인권활동가인 베레켓이 수십년간 이어진 내전의 그림자가 드리워진 에티오피아의 정치적 상황과 종족/부족(tribe) 간 분쟁의 근본적인 원인에 대해 공유합니다. 집단 정체성의 정치화가 국지적인 분쟁이 일상이 되는 현실을 초래하는 가운데, 베레켓은, "민족/종족 연방주의"라는 실패한 이데올로기가 어떻게 화합을 촉진하는 대신 분쟁의 불씨가 되었는지 짚어봅니다.

도르카스의 이야기

This month, Dorcas, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country in Central Africa, shares her compelling narrative about her country of origin and the reasons she was forcefully forced to leave a decade ago. She also fosters understanding about living in Korea as an asylum seeker and refugee and discusses her efforts to rebuild her life professionally and personally, along with her recent endeavors to empower refugee women in Korea.

Cambodia Under Hun Sen Regime

훈센 통치 아래의 38년, 캄보디아의 정치적 풍경 1979-2023

Sokhem from Cambodia will speak about Cambodia's political situation, particularly under the 38-year-long authoritarian rule of Prime Minister Hun Sen, focusing on the recent general elections, as well as the relationships with neighboring countries such as Vietnam and China from the viewpoint of refugees. Additionally, he will delve into discussions about opposition leaders in exile, including himself, and their political activities for democracy.
